Alberta Renewable Tenders Power Ahead

Canada_logo_greenleafHere’s a short but stunning summary of the last several months in Alberta’s new renewable energy build-out:

December 2017: The long-awaited results of the AESO’s first Renewable Electricity Program tender (Round 1) are announced. History is made, with the lowest prices for wind-power in Canada ever, on par with the Midwestern states like Dakota and Iowa. The tender also resulted in an additional 200MW contracted, over the original capacity requested.  At an average price of $37/MWh, the developers and projects selected were:

Capital Power Inc, Whitla wind project, 201.6MW

Enel Green Power Canada, Riverview Wind Farm, 115MW, and Castle Rock Ridge expansion, 30.6MW

EDP Renewables Canada Ltd, Sharp Hills Wind Farm, 248.4MW

The four projects taken together represent roughly $800M in new development in the province.

This brings Alberta’s total installed solar capacity to approximately 37MW, the second highest in Canada.

February 2018: At the Alberta-Saskatchewan Renewable Energy Finance Summit, Environment Minister Shannon Phillips announces REP 2 and 3 to the delight of all in attendance. REP 2 requires Aboriginal shared-ownership, and totals 300MW, while REP 3 calls for 400MW.  Both auctions will run simultaneously. The RFQ deadline is end of June 2018.

Saskatchewan: For those keeping an eye on the smaller but attendant renewable energy tenders taking place in AB’s eastern neighbor, there are plenty of resources at the SaskPower Renewables Roadmap.
